Kind of, yeah. I didn't wan't it to look exactly like blood, but rather suggest it.
I just wanted to try a darker approach when depicting ponies for a change. While using gouache, it tends to drip a lot if you apply it boldly. I could have stopped the dripping, but I thought it gave a good aesthetic.
Looking back on this, it reminds me of the Tesco incident in the UK. Thanks for the comment d715.
Haha yeah I suppose so. When I made this I didn't know about grimdark. Even today i haven't seen much grimdark as im not a huge fan of it.
I thought that I should try it to learn about it myself, rather than exhibit it to show how original I am. I find ponies so fascinating, so I wanted to explore different approaches, even though they were already done by others. I wanted to keep an open mind about different art styles.
I don't always feel like I have to do art that is popular, so it doesn't matter if grimdark has died down. I am not attempting to respark it or defame it. This is my own personal expression, for my own development.
Its your choice to have a stance on grimdark and that is totally up to you. Fortunately not everyone is the same, otherwise the world would be a boring place. Some people like grimdark, some people dislike grimdark, and some people couldn't care less. The universal brony code is to: 'Love and Tolerate', and while I think that mindset shouldn't be applied everywhere, I think it is apt here.
There are many art movements and styles, and each has its enthusiasts and its critics. That said, artists shouldn't feel discouraged to explore visually, especially when expressing the unpopular.
